A group of powerful businessmen in the USA were denied by the National Football League when they wanted to own the franchises of the football team in 1960. After got denied that businessmen group has decided to introduce a new league in the country. They named that newborn alternative league is American Football League (AFL).

After forming AFL, the whole scenario has changed for the NFL. The AFL became the great rivals for the NFL. Both of these two leagues were competing for support, fans and the football players. After several incidents happened, the owners of these two leagues negotiated an agreement in 1970. According to the agreement, these two groups were merged and reformed themselves as a conference.

In 1966, the first game of the Super Bowl was played between the AFL Champion and the NFL Champion. The actual name of that game was “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”. This name wasn’t exactly catchy at that time. Therefore, a new name for this championship game was becoming necessary.

Lamar Hunt, the owner of Kansas City Chiefs from AFL, first proposed the name Super Bowl for that championship game. After several procedures, the name “Super Bowl”, which was proposed by Hunt, was established to represent the game.

After negotiation between AFL and NFL, these two leagues were merged and two main conferences were introduced under the NFL in the year 1970. One is the National Football Conference (NFC) and the other one is the American Football Conference (AFC). Both of these two conferences run their won regular season every year. The Champions of these two conferences now play each other in the Super Bowl every year.
